California Ground Squirrels, such as this fine specimen, were darting around in some numbers around the Yosemite National Park village. Used to humans, these weren’t shy and came very close to us. That this photograph was shot with a 50mm lens and not particularly cropped attests this.
From a technical perspective this photograph came out well – it’s correctly exposed and it’s sharp. Compositionally I got only one thing right – I shot the squirrel level with it, instead of from above looking down at it. The squirrel however is missing its fabulous tail and it’s in too docile a pose (an action shot of it darting or leaping about would’ve been nice).

Funny thing !
